Common Ice-Maker Issues

Below, we’ll be taking a look at the most common ice-maker issues we see every day.

Freezer Temperature Issues

Freezer Temperature Issues

If your freezer is either too warm or too cold, you might have an issue with your ice-maker’s thermostat or its condenser coils. To check this, start by visually inspecting your unit’s condenser coils, which will either be located at the back or bottom of your unit. If these are gunked up with dust or dirt, it will prevent the unit from dispersing heat properly, in turn, preventing it from making ice. If your coils are dirty, you can use a vacuum to clean them, and then wipe them down with a wet rag. Just make sure to unplug your unit first and allow the coils to cool down before cleaning.

Alternatively, your thermostat may be malfunctioning. To diagnose this, you’ll want to use a multimeter to see if the component is getting any power. If not, it will need to be replaced.

Ice Maker Assembly

Commercial Ice-Maker Repair

For an ice-maker to function correctly, it relies on a variety of internal parts and components. For instance, depending on your unit’s make and model, it will likely have a water inlet valve, an ice tray, a cooling system, and an area for it to store the pre-made ice. When any of these components fail to function correctly, your ice-maker won’t be able to produce ice when needed. Therefore, before you give us a call, make sure to inspect your unit to see if you can pinpoint the source of your problem.

If you notice that any of its parts or components look worn out or broken, you can almost be sure that this is what’s causing your problem. In some cases, you may be able to replace and repair these parts on your own.

Ice-Maker Module

While, in some cases, it may be possible to replace or repair specific ice-maker components, in other cases, it may be a better idea to replace the entire ice-maker module. To do this, you’ll need to first shut off the power and water source before disconnecting the module from the inside of your fridge/freezer. Then, once removed, you’ll be able to replace it with a new module.

This is relatively straightforward to do on your own.

Door Switch

Because your unit’s door switch is used continuously every time you open or close the door, it gets a lot of wear and tear. Therefore, it’s not unusual for this component to wear out over time and need replacement. To check this, you can try to open the door and manually hold the switch down. When you do this, the unit’s interior light should turn off, just as it would when the door is closed.

However, if the light remains on, then you might have an issue with your door switch, which will prevent the ice-maker and other components from functioning when they should.

Fortunately, you can easily replace a door switch on your own. Or, you can give us a call, and we can send someone out to do this for you in a matter of a few hours.

Water Filter

I’m sure you’ve heard about all the chemicals and minerals that could potentially be floating around in your tap water. This alone should be enough to convince you to use a filtration system for your water and ice. Using a water filter won’t only improve your ice’s safety and quality when it comes to your ice-maker, but it will also contribute to your machine’s healthy functioning.

Although most modern ice-makers have been built-in filters, which should always be replaced at regular intervals, if your unit doesn’t have a built-in filter, you can try using filtered water from your tap, which results in better quality ice, as well as fewer filtration problems in the future.
